Here we have a rope bed in the Viking style I made in the fall of
1992. It's mostly red oak - the carved headboard is poplar. The
carving is also Viking style, who did ornate knotwork similar to the
Celts. It's hard to see here, but the top of the headboard has a
running pattern made from removing little triangles of wood. Look up
"chip carving" for more information on that. The finish is just
linseed oil and is darkening nicely with time. The piece of poplar I
found for the headboard was almost white when new. What makes a rope
bed work for a queen-size bed is the hidden platform underneath.
Otherwise, the bed sags badly and you end up in the middle.
